The Piazza Duomo is social center of Catania with the cathedral dedicated to Santa Agata dominating the enormous space. In the center is the Fontana dell'Elefante surmounted by a carved lava elephant bearing an Egyptian obelisk topped by an astral globe. The fountain was created by sculptor Giovanni Battissta Vaccarini in 1736.
